Appliance Choices: Gas Or Electric Dryer?

If you are purchasing a new dryer for your home, one of the questions you may be considering is whether you should buy an electric dryer or a gas one.

If you are purchasing a new dryer for your home, one of the questions you may be considering is whether you should buy an electric dryer or a gas one.

Cost to run is one factor. A survey in 2004 found that electric dryers were about twice as expensive to run as gas dryers. Another source’s August 2005 calculation reached a similar conclusion. However, gas dryers are also more expensive than electric dryers, usually by about $50-$80 for comparable quality. Plus, if your previous dryer was electric and you don’t have gas lines hooked up for a gas dryer, you will have to pay for their installation. For a typical family of four with gas lines already installed, they will save the $50 extra they spent on the gas dryer in their utility bills in just under a year. Since most home inspection experts agree that a dryer should last about 10-15 years, the gas dryer is the wiser economic choice, maybe even if you have to have the lines put in.

There are other features available on both gas and electric dryers that can affect their energy efficiency, and therefore, your energy costs, as well. One is a moisture sensor. This sensor can tell when your clothes are dry and when they are, it shuts itself off. This can be a huge energy saver. Another feature to look at closely is capacity. A dryer with more cubic foot area in the drum allows more air to move between clothes and thus, dry them faster. When combined with a moisture sensor, this will lead to shorter cycles without having to keep an eye on your laundry.

Prices for gas and electricity supply may fluctuate, but these generalities should hold true in most places. When you’re shopping, look for the black and yellow EnergyGuide label on dryers and other appliances. They will tell you how much it will cost to run with average usage. Check out this site for a spreadsheet that has space for you to enter your local rates for gas and electricity so you can individualize your calculations: pavingmasonryjimcarson.paving/a/2005/12/gas_versus_elec_1.shtml. The consensus seems to be that while gas prices are going up, gas dryers are still cheaper to run than electric dryers (especially since electricity rates generally rise when gas prices do), but the gap is shrinking and in some localities, may have flipped. That’s why it’s a good idea to enter your own numbers.

Door hardware – Have you got a handle on it?

513

First impressions count. The first thing that a visitor or potential purchaser will actually come into contact with when they reach your home and make contact with it is your door or gate hardware. By this I mean the latch on your gate, the pull of your door chimes, the button of the doorbell or the handle of the door. What could put a buyer off more than a door that is difficult to open or a handle that is not sturdy to the touch.

By this I mean the latch on your gate, the pull of your door chimes, the button of the doorbell or the handle of the door. What could put a buyer off more than a door that is difficult to open or a handle that is not sturdy to the touch. What chance would you have of clinching that all important sale if your property viewer finds the door knob comes off in their hand or finds that they have to enter your property through the window because the door hardware prevents the front door being opened.

Not very likely I know but imagine that you’ve invited your Boss for dinner to discuss that all important raise and the first thing he gives you when you open the door is the latch from the garden gate that you’ve been meaning to repair for ages.

Don’t put it off any longer. Replacing your door hardware will update your property or, with some retro door furniture, may even move it back to an age when it had its original features. New handles and door locks will improve the security of your property and may even gain you a discount on your home insurance, thus offsetting the cost of the replacement.

Many people are concerned with the look of their door furniture and want everything through their home to match. A contemporary update to your living space is greatly enhanced if you take the time to change your door handles and some perfectionists will even change the doors themselves.

At the other end of the scale changing only the plastic door handles on that tired old bedroom furniture can give it a new lease of life. The positive feel of a solid metal handle pushing your drawers closed can save money in the long run. Your partner may feel that they’ve got new bedroom furniture without you having to go to the expense of actually buying any. A few dollars wisely invested in new handles and latches could save thousands in the short term. An ageing but serviceable kitchen can be given a new lease of life with new cabinet hardware and doors. Any Realtor will tell you that a kitchen is one of the major selling points when trying to market your house or rent out your property. A lick of paint on the doors and new handles can add a great deal to the price you can command for the property.

Door hardware is available in every conceivable style and finish and can be made of a wide variety of materials, rope and stone being the most diverse I can think of. Before you take the plunge check out all of the on-line stores and ensure that you get a handle (no pun intended) on the deals available and exactly what you are going to do before you dive in.

A carpenter is a person who creates objects made of wood for various projects, from home remodeling to furniture. These skilled craftsmen should be able to complete the work per your specifications. There are several types of carpenters to choose from and hiring one should be determined based on the scope of the project.

A rough carpenter is someone who specializes in roofing, framing and structural work. These designs are not likely to need exact finishing edges or artistic ability. These people are generally used for home construction, additions and remodels. Choose an individual who has experience and can provide references of past projects. They may also need to have knowledge of structural safety and local building codes. Ask what requirements are necessary for your area and ensure they comply with those standards. If the project is small, budget may be a consideration. Many inexpensive rough carpenters are available who will provide a quality product.

A finish carpenter is someone who artistically crafts fine wood pieces with an eye toward exact joints and finishes. There is minimal margin for error so carpenters of this sort are generally highly skilled and experienced. Because of this, the cost is typically a bit more expensive but you will get a quality product. These types specialize in furnishings, cabinetry and other fine woodworking. Larger projects such as home remodels and building may also utilize this type if it is necessary to have precision or an artistic flair. It is important to discuss the ideas you have and get feedback on how the carpenter will accomplish the task. Look at pictures of previous work to get a feel for their style and skill level.

When hiring a carpenter get a contract in writing. This should include the scope of the work to be completed outlining all specifications, requirements and any special considerations to be made. Ensure the total price for the project is detailed as well as payment procedures. Many carpenters will require a down payment for purchasing materials but do not require a complete advanced payment. Ensure you have some leverage for quality assurance by retaining a portion for acceptance of work. Check the terms of any warranties available. Even pieces that look nice may not be structurally sound or may need tweaking after in use for a period of time. Be sure the carpenter will be willing to make minor repairs within the scope of work if necessary.

A carpenter becomes more skilled with experience, so it is important to check references and see past projects. For minor, one off work, hiring on a budget is acceptable and you will likely get decent quality of work inexpensively. For more important or larger projects, however, look for a carpenter who has a track record of quality work and sound references. The slightly added expense in the beginning may be worth saving frustration and disappointment in the end.

Tile is the traditional material used for shower and tub walls. But the grout requires lots of maintenance. An alternative is to replace the tile with showers stalls, which essentially is small rooms with walls, made of tile, glass, plastic, or some other waterproof material with either a hanging waterproof curtain or a glass door that slides or swings open.

Prefabricated units, like pre-fab tub units, are usually made from fiberglass-reinforced acrylic or fiberglass and come in a wide assortment of colors and styles. Some come as single-piece units and some require assembly, such as those with three wall panels and a base pan.

Shower stalls offer an astonishing variety of choices at affordable prices. Bathtubs are very simple fixtures designed to contain water and one or two people, which are either built into the bathroom or they are freestanding. A combination tub is merely a joining of a shower stall with a bathtub.

Single piece fiberglass showers and tubs are relatively inexpensive and good quality products. They are usually too large to be installed in a remodeling situation but are often used in new construction. Shower stalls, using fiberglass or a combination of metal and fiberglass, are economical, and provide good tub and shower installation.

If you are planning to tile a bathroom by yourself, this article will help you plan your bathroom tiling installation in the best and cost effective way as well as giving you some tile design ideas. We will guide through your new bathroom tile design and installation planning step by step.

Attention – Note that planning your tiling installation properly is the most important step for smooth, easy going and problem free bathroom tile installation.

Remember a DIY bathroom tiling installation isn’t a quick job, so don’t miss the point and plan it right. All the time spent planning your tiling installation will save you money and headaches.

You have to plan your bathroom-tiling project carefully; choose the tile design and tile patterns, what materials you need and which tools you require
The tile patterns that you can create with different tiles are limited only by your own Tile design ideas. A large variety of standard tile designs, ideas and tile patterns are available. Some tile manufacturers may make special custom tile designs for you.

Choosing the tile design is obviously the first thing you need to do, with out deciding this you can not start planning your bathroom tile installation.

You can find a few basic bathroom tile design ideas & tile patterns, check it out.

For some Inspiration you can check Google pictures for some Bathroom Tile design ideas, there are over a million bathroom pictures here.

Tile suitability – Tiles are made in porous and non-porous varieties. When planning a bathroom tile installation, you should choose the non-porous ceramic tiles.

If your bathroom is small and the tiles have designs on them, you may have to go for smaller sized tiles as they have smaller designs. Too large tile designs may not suit small bathrooms so choose a smaller tile design for smaller bathrooms.

If you go for a plain color, the size isn’t that important, however try to follow the rule above anyway.

A good tile design idea is to choose contrasting colors for the floor tiles and wall tiles. Then have a skirting line the same color as the floor tile.

Another tile design idea is changing color at chest level, which will change the look of your bathroom.

Try to choose bathroom accessories that compliment the color of the walls.

Materials – How much will you need? – To calculate the quantity of materials that you need, you must take precise measurements of the total area that you wish to tile.

From the total area and the size of each tile, you can calculate the number of tiles required (you must know the size of the tiles you have chosen).

You must also remember to take into account the gaps between tiles when calculating the number of tiles needed, so make sure you include spacers appropriate to the tile size chosen.

If this equation becomes a little complicated, you can always use the table “Calculating your Tile needs” (link here) on this page.

When calculating consider more than half a tile as a full tile and less than a half tile as a half tile. If you have chosen a multicolored bathroom, calculate each color separately and note down the tile requirements.

Ordering tiles – Order the tiles on the basis of the measurements taken. Note that tiles are packed in boxes and the supplier is unlikely to sell tiles individually.

Remember to order extra tiles as you can be sure that some tiles will break during installation (even the best professional breaks tiles). In addition some of these extra tiles could be used in the future if any tiles need replacing. This is not only good but an advisable practice.

Always order additional tiles since the tiles you have ordered may not be available in future, and if you require replacement tiles, you will have difficulty finding a match.

Best tools for a good job – Make sure you choose the right tool for the job. It’ll make the job easier and safer too. You probably have a basic toolbox however for tiling installation you need special tiling tools.

Some of them are expensive but don’t waste your money buying professional tools that you won’t use enough to pay for themselves. Instead hire them. For some $$ you can have the best tools for a few days. And if you’ve done your planning properly you’ll only need them for a few hours.

Remember, that planning your tiling installation properly is the most important step for smooth, easy going and problem free bathroom tile installation.

I hope it’s been useful, happy tiling!

Two things that you Must Do when using Aerosol Spray Paints

762

By doing two simple things when using aerosol spray paints, you can solve or eliminate common problems. Problems like inconsistent paint color, clogged spray nozzles and the inability to completely empty the aerosol spray paint can. These two simple steps are printed on the labels of most, if not all aerosol spray cans, but are not always read or are the instructions followed.

Have you ever had this happen? Your mailbox is starting to look dull and weathered. It could use a fresh coat of paint. So you decide to paint it the same color as your window shutters. You purchase a can of custom matched aerosol spray paint and you paint the mailbox. It looks great, a perfect match with the window shutters. After using the aerosol spray paint, you replace the cap on the can and put it in your storage room.

A couple of months later, you want to paint an outdoor flower pot the same color as the mailbox. You get the can of aerosol spray paint that you used on the mailbox and you press the spray nozzle and nothing comes out. Even after digging at the opening of the spray nozzle with a paperclip, the can will still not spray. So you end up throwing away a half of can of spray paint and you still need your flower pot painted.

Or maybe it did spray, but now the color does not match the mailbox and shutters. It had changed colors or something. It might have even looked like the right color at first, but changed color as you used it. Again, you end up discarding the half-filled can of paint. What a waste of your time and money. What caused these problems? Is there something you were doing wrong?

At one time or another, everyone one has used an aerosol can of some type. It is simple and anyone can use them. You just point the can, press the spray nozzle and that’s it. Even though it seems very simple, there are important instructions and safety precautions that need to be followed.

These are printed on the labels of each aerosol spray paint can. They include instructions about shaking the can, when and where to use the product. Even how to properly clear the spray nozzle after each use. That will ensure that the next time you need to use the can, it will be ready. Certain steps should always be taken, every time you use an aerosol spray paint.

The first and the last things that you do, when using an aerosol spray paint are the most important. The first step is always to shake the can vigorously, and listen for the shaker ball to rattle. Then continue to shake the can for at least one to three minutes. This helps to assure that the paint is thoroughly mixed with the solvents and propellant that are also enclosed in the can.

When the color of the paint varies from the expected color, the most common solution to this problem is to vigorously shake the can. Since the propellant used in aerosols is a liquid gas, the propellant mixes with and actually becomes part of the paint.

The pressure of the propellant as it escapes through the opening of the spray nozzle, allows the paint mixture to propel out of the aerosol can. Thus another important reason for shaking the can. During use, the can should be occasionally shaken to insure that the paint stays thoroughly mixed at all times. The pigments of the paint can settle to the bottom of the can, while spraying for a long period of time.

To insure that the aerosol spray paint works every time it is used and the contents of the container are completely emptied out. The last thing you must do, is to clear the spray nozzle. When you are finished using the aerosol spray paint, you must turn the can upside down and press the spray nozzle. This removes the paint that was left in the spray nozzle and the dip tube.

Immediately after the paint has been cleared from the spray nozzle and dip tube, the color of the spray will become clear. At that point, the spray nozzle has been adequately cleared of paint. You can now replace the cap and store as recommended on the can label. The aerosol spray paint will be ready for the next time you need it. When using aerosol spray paint, these two very simple, but very important steps must be taken to achieve maximum results.

So if you follow these simple and important instructions, when using aerosol spray paints, you will help ensure that the color of the paint stays uniform with the original color. You will be able to completely empty the paint from the cans and get the maximum coverage that you deserve. Using aerosol spray paints are economical, easy to use and produce professional results.

Carpet steam cleaners use a variety of different carpet cleaning equipment. There are gas powered truck mounted machines, electric truck mounted machines and electric portable machines. This article will provide you with the basic differences between these machines.
The first machine is a gas truck mount carpet cleaner. This is one of the most common machines used in the carpet cleaning industry. This machine uses either the trucks engine or a separate gas engine to drive a vacuum blower and water pump. These machines have the capacity to provide the greatest amount of vacuum and the highest heat. They are the preferred piece of steam cleaning equipment because of their power, speed and efficiency. With this machine, the cleaner only needs to bring 2 hoses into your home. This eliminates the need to bring bulky equipment into your hose and decreases noise in your home.
Electric truck mounted cleaners are another type of carpet cleaning machine. They are similar to gas truck mounts but they use an electric motor to drive a vacuum blower and water pump. They are nice because they are a little more environmentally friendly and they are much quieter to run. They do not provide as much vacuum power as gas powered machines but do an adequate job. With this machine a cleaner also only needs to bring 2 hoses into your home.
The last machine I will discuss is a portable carpet cleaning machine. This machine uses electricity to power a vacuum motor and water pump. All of the equipment is located in a portable assembly that the cleaner will bring into your home. This machine is great for areas not serviceable by truck mounted machines like apartments and high rises. It does not provide as much power as the the truck mount machines but it has enough power to get the job done. The drawback of this machine is that the cleaner must bring it into your home and it can be loud and cumbersome to use.

Children’s Safety for the Wood Stove Owner

As energy costs are rising, the wood stove is coming back into favor with many homeowners. While a wood stove can heat an entire home or help offset the high cost of electric or gas heat, consideration for children in the home must be a top priority.

As energy costs are rising, the wood stove is coming back into favor with many homeowners. While a wood stove can heat an entire home or help offset the high cost of electric or gas heat, consideration for children in the home must be a top priority.

A fence either purchased or custom built, must be installed around the wood stove if young children are present. Crawling infants and toddlers are most at risk as they are too young to understand the dangers of a wood stove and the word ‘no’ is simply not enough.

The enclosure must be tall enough that only an adult can step over it. It must also be made of materials that cannot be climbed on. Vertical rails or fine mesh can keep a child from climbing over the fence. The enclosure should also be placed far enough from the wood stove that a reaching child cannot touch the surfaces of the stove.

Even with a fence installed, a crawling child or toddler should never be left alone unsupervised in a room with a wood stove burning. Toddlers, especially, like to toss items over the fence. Heavier objects such as blocks could easily crack or break the glass front of certain models of stoves. Plastic items, should they reach the top of the stove could easily melt and release toxic fumes into the area.

From an early age, children should be taught the dangers of a wood stove. It should be explained that fire is indeed hot and should not be played with in any form. The same explanations given to children about the kitchen cook stove and safety should apply to a wood stove heater.

Children are fascinated with fire. As you are loading a wood stove with either logs or pellets, this becomes a perfect time to discuss with them the dangers. You don’t want a child to be terrified of the wood stove, but at the same time you do want to instill a healthy respect for the appliance.

Older children can help with wood stove chores, such as bringing in firewood or pellets. They can also help sweep up the area or engage younger children while the parent is occupied with the stove. Other chores, such as loading the stove or emptying the ash pan is best left to older teenagers or adults.

Another concern with wood stoves, not just for children, is the pollutants put into the indoor air by the stove. If a child has an allergy to smoke or asthma, a wood stove could make an attack more likely. Care should be taken that such a child is out of the room when the stove is opened for filling or for cleaning the ash pan.

Before purchasing any wood stove, make sure that the stove is EPA approved. Do not take the salesman’s word for this; ask to see a demonstration model that includes the EPA sticker. The EPA has stringent requirements for wood stoves that will help keep indoor pollutants to a minimum.

The disposal of the contents of the ash pan is another concern when children are present. Ashes should not be dumped in any area where children are likely to play, as there could be hot embers alive in the ashes. A better solution is to dump the ashes into an ash bucket and allow it to sit twenty four hours or at least overnight. Ash buckets should be kept within the confines of the fence until totally cold.

Firewood or pellets should also be kept within the fenced enclosure. Any wood chips or pellets that have fallen outside the fence should be swept up immediately if young children are in the home. Both chips and pellets pose a choking hazard for children who put either into their mouths.

A pot of water should be kept on the wood stove when the stove is in use. Wood heat is a very dry heat and the water will help keep the air moist. This is especially important to help keep children’s skin from drying out during the heating season. Infants are more at risk, but children and adults of any age can be affected by the drier air of a wood heated home.

The use of precautions and safety measures can make children and wood stoves a happy mix. For centuries, children were raised in homes with either a wood stove or an open fireplace. With diligence and supervision, any home can be heated with wood and still have happy, healthy children.

Do you have one special tool around the house that you simply couldn’t live without? A gadget or gizmo that makes your life a whole lot easier simply because it exists. Most people have one little thing they simply cope without when it comes to keeping house, and for many, the portable practicality of a hand held vacuum cleaner makes this the tool that trumps the lot.

Regardless of your home environment, a hand held vacuum cleaner can make your life a whole lot easier. Whether you’re in a tiny apartment or vast mansion, these little cleaners are the ideal way to cope with those unexpected spills without having to drag the full-grown vacuum from out of storage. For anyone with messy kids or a crumb-creating spouse, a hand held vacuum can help you stay clean and tidy without losing your sanity.

Because the truth is that very few of us do housework for the sake of it. Perhaps there are a few dedicated souls who enjoy all the stretching and bending and lifting the whole process involves, but for the rest of us, it is the result that counts. A tidy home is nice, it is relaxing, and nothing is more frustrating than achieving one only to see your hard work shattered by the falling of crumbs on your newly vacuumed floor.

A hand held vacuum allows you to enjoy the same results without any of the hard work. Those of us who find peace in an organized home usually hide the tools we use to create it out of sight, and so dragging out that vacuum cleaner can be a chore all of its own. But for small spills and messes, a pint-sized cleaner can help you retain your sense of peace, because it helps you realize that the small stuff, well, really is just small stuff.

The tools we use to perform our household tasks should be things we love to use; this is the best way to ensure that housework actually gets done! A small and portable cleaning device is the ultimate in user-friendly cleaning equipment, cleaning up small messes before they loom large. You don’t have to work all the time to achieve the tidy home you want, you simply need the right tools to help you work quickly and easily. Pick up a hand held vacuum cleaner, and see how something so small can make a big difference.
