It’s time again to spruce up the outdoors. When purchasing patio furniture there are several important factors to consider that will determine the type and the cost of patio furniture you choose.

First, it is important to consider the cost. There are so many options to choose from, ranging from very cost effective, to very high end furniture. An important option to consider is buying bulk. If you have a large outdoor patio, buying in bulk will ensure across the board coordination of your patio set. You will always have extra seating for entertaining, without having to pull out the old mismatch patio chairs that get packed away in a shed.

Second, determine the size of the area you plan to furnish. Are you just looking for a small patio set, or do you want to furnish all 3 decks and the pool side area? Ordering in bulk, you can have a variety of furniture that coordinates throughout your outdoor patio. Do you frequently entertain outdoors? If so, a large variety of outdoor patio furniture will ensure that your guests will be comfortable, and notice your beautiful outdoor space.

Lastly, consider your location. Some types of furniture, such as resin patio furniture, hold up better in sunny and windy conditions, such as the beach. Other types of furniture are more resilient to winterizing, such as melamine furniture, and if you live in colder climates, this will be important when the patio furniture gets put up for the season.

So, whatever your budget, size, or location, visit PatioStuff for some great ideas and styles in patio furniture.

Just 20 years ago, choosing a central heating radiator was a no brainer. You chose a white, rectangular radiator made of steel or cast iron because that’s all they had. Nowadays radiators have become home decoration items in themselves and you have a huge choice of styles, colours and materials. But appearance aside, you must take many factors into account before ordering. With Radiators being one of the most important elements of central heating installation, you need to get this procedure right. Here are some factors you should bear in mind when shopping for radiators for your central heating system

Firstly, before you choose your radiators, confirm whether you have a direct or indirect heating system. Then, you need to work out how much heat each room requires. Your plumber or heating engineer will determine this from such factors as the sizes of your rooms. There are also calculators that allow you to work it out for yourself. Radiator heat outputs are measured in British Thermal Units (BTUs) or in Watts.

Next you have to determine the optimum location of the radiators in your rooms. Heating engineers agree that the best location for a radiator is in the coldest part of the room. In addition, they traditionally specify that radiators should be installed on the external wall beneath the window. This allows the cold air coming in via the window to be warmed up. With modern double glazing and insulation methods, this tends to be less important, however. When determining the location of your radiators, try to optimize your use of existing pipework as much as possible. Installing new pipes can be expensive and disruptive.

You should also note that a double radiator has less heat output thatn two single units thought the overall size may be the same. In other words, two single radiators are more efficient than one double. You should bear this in mind if installing in a large room.

One good thing about modern designs is that you have much more flexibility in locating your radiators. For example, if the existing position of furniture is limiting your options, you can choose a tall, narrow unit that takes up minimal floor space.

So after measuring up for your needs and deciding on location, you’re ready to order your new radiators. Now you can decide whether you want a designer or traditional radiator and decide on factors such as colour and material. Selecting online is a smart move as it allows you to see the whole range of designs in one place. But after choosing your radiator, it’s good to talk to an expert before placing your order. Installing new radiators is an important project and the human tough is vital for your satisfaction.

Air Purifier – Help Or Hype

We take a look at the rage about air purifiers and speculate as to whether they really do help clean the air or if it’s all just hype.

The world has become health crazy. There is no getting around it, we are turning towards healthier whole grain cereals and breads, we’re exercising more, and we’re cleaning our homes like fanatical lunatics. Included in this cleaning craze is the obsession with cleaning our air. We’ve got air purifiers in just about every room. This leads to just one question.

Does it do any good?

To begin with, getting an air purifier for your home can be confusing as anything. With all the different brands to choose from and different types of air purification systems it’s almost impossible to know which one is any good, if any of them are.

Then of course there is the burning question, “Do we really need an air purifier anyway?”. Is the air in our homes really that bad? Haven’t we been breathing this same air long before there ever were air purification systems? What’s changed?

All of these questions are enough to give us a headache if not outright drive us crazy. Well, let’s deal with one question that we at last can answer.

While it is true that we have been breathing the same air for thousands of years, we really haven’t. With the industrial revolution and all the garbage that is sent into our air from factories, the truth is, the air is not as clean as it used to be. All you have to do is take a drive down to the factory district in Trenton, NJ and take a whiff. There will be no doubt in your mind that the air down there is dirty.

But the problem goes much deeper than that. If you’re wondering why scientists are so concerned about plants it is because they give off the one thing we need to breathe, oxygen. They take in carbon dioxide to do this. So if the plants die, we die. It’s that simple. The plants are actually are a true air purification system. Still, people feel they need electronic air purification systems. Why? How do they work and what good are they if any at all?

Actually, there are many types of systems and each one works differently. We’re not going to go into detail of how each one works as that could take a book in itself. But the main types of systems are HEPA Filter Systems, which draw the air through the filter and clean it; Ozone Air Purifiers, which work by generating more ozone molecules in the air; Ionic Air Cleaners, which work by negatively charging the air particles in the room; Electrostatic Precipitators, which work by using positive and negative charges to collect particles and Electrostatic Filters which work by creating a static charge which attracts and collects particles in the air.

Supposedly, these various technologies produce the end result of cleaning your air. Do they? Well, there are tests you can run to determine if the amount of allergens in your home have been reduced but ultimately it is all going to come down to one thing.

Do you feel better? Does the air smell cleaner? Do you notice a difference?

Air purifiers. Help or hype?

We may never really know.

Hardwood floors make a beautiful, elegant addition to your home. They are lovely and lend a graceful ambience to any room. Unfortunately, many people don’t take care of their hardwood floors like they should. With some precautionary care, your hardwood floors will remain beautiful well into old age.

Sunlight

If your floor is exposed to sun during the day, invest in sheer curtains, drapes, or blinds that will limit sunlight as UV rays can damage hardwood floors over time.
Furniture
Furniture glides are a great investment for your hardwood floor. They are small coverings, usually made of felt or another soft material, that are placed under the feet of furniture to prevent scratches. To ensure that dust and grit don’t get imbedded, clean the glides regularly. When moving furniture, always lift it up. You should never slide furniture on a hardwood floor, even with glides. If the piece is too heavy to lift, place a cotton sock over the leg and slide it carefully.
Shoes

Avoid wearing any kind of heel when walking on a wood floor, and make sure this rule is enforced for your guests and family members as well. Hells can leave tiny dents that may go unnoticed until the light hits them and you notice your beautiful smooth floor is now a speckled design of small dents.
Area Rugs
Area rugs are not only a nice way to decorate a hardwood floor; they are also a great way to save it from stains and spills. Place area rugs in general area that might be more prone to stains, like entrances from outside, below the stove and kitchen counters, in the bathroom, etc.
Sweeping and Vacuuming
Sweep floors and vacuum them regularly. Use a vacuum with a brush attachment as beater bars can damage and dent a hardwood floor.
Water
Avoid mopping except with a special dust mop or other wood-safe cleaning agent. Be careful not to over clean your hardwood floor because too much cleaning will dull the finish.
Water is a hardwood floor’s greatest enemy, so avoid mopping with it at all. If you spill water or another liquid on your hardwood floor, blot it up immediately starting from the outside of the spill and working your way in.
Cleaning
Use a special dust mop or other cleaning agent that is wood-safe. Select your cleaner carefully and always read the label. If it doesn’t specifically say it is safe for hardwood floors, don’t use it. The right cleaner should match the finish on your hardwood floor.
Care for your hardwood floors as you would anything precious and valuable; treat them well by following the preventative measures above and your hardwood floors will stay safe, beautiful, and durable for years to come.

Failure to do this can cause rippling or gaps between the boards that can be impossible to fix without tearing the planks out and starting from the beginning.

If there is some type of existing floor it needs to be completely removed before laying the first piece of your new laminate. If you are replacing an old floor, cut it into manageable pieces and pry them up with a long handled scraper for best results. Make sure every piece is up and then vacuum. Make the floor as even you can you without sanding. The most important thing to check for and fix are low spots, if you let them go you will have a squeaky floor.

After that you put down the underlayment. Start from the walls and work out from there, use a utility knife to cut the underlayment to fit the room. It’s not a bad idea to mark up the underlayment to use as a guide when laying your laminate boards. Use a wood spacer to leave an expansion gap between your laminate and the wall, then work your way out from there.

You should have to only moisten the glue on the edge of each board for it to activate. Then slide the next board into pace and press it firmly against the previous for a good, snug fit. You want to use a pry bar to protect your wall once you start laying the last of the boards. Simply ease the end boards into place and you’re done.

Be sure to test an unseen corner of your carpet before trying any of the following solutions to make sure that the solution works for your carpet and doesn’t hurt the color or fabric. Here are a few of the most common stains and ideas for removing them:

Blood

Water, ammonia, and dish detergent:
1) Blot with a white paper towel to remove as much of the blood stain that you can and neutralize by spraying the stain with a solution of 1/2 cup cool water and 1 Tbsp. of clear ammonia, making sure not to wet the backing.
2) Blot with a white paper towel to remove excess moisture
3) Mix 1 qt. cool water and 1/4 tsp. of dish detergent, like Dawn or Joy, that doesn’t contain bleach or lanolin (Dawn, Joy, etc) and Spray onto stained area.
4) Work the solution in by blotting the area and rinse with a spray bottle of cool water.
5) Apply a ‘pad’ of paper towels and place something heavy on top, like a few heavy books, to absorb the moisture.*

*If all of the stain does not come out, add 3 percent hydrogen peroxide to the ends of the carpet and let it set for 1 hour. Repeat step number five.

Hydrogen peroxide and boiling water:
1) Pour hydrogen peroxide onto carpet.
2) Blot with clean white cloth and follow immediately with boiling water. Blot again, and stain should be gone.

Gum

Peanut Butter:
1) Put a spoon of peanut butter on the gum.
2) Use Spoon to mix it into gum and let stand for three minutes.
3) Rub with spoon to loosen and wipe with a wet rag with a picking motion.
4) Take a rag and wash the spot.

Ice: Put pile of ice on gum and let melt until gum is hardened (freeze it). It becomes brittle, and you may be able to remove it. If this doesn’t work, try another option.

Lighter Fluid: apply lighter fluid on for a few minutes and wipe-the gum should come out.

WD-40: soak carpet with the WD-40 and rub. If it doesn’t work the first time, try again. It should come out after a couple of applications.

Wax

Lighter Fluid: put lighter fluid on for a few minutes and wipe-the wax should come out.

Warm iron and damp, white cloth:
1) Get as much wax as possible off the carpet–scrape and pick at the wax after it has dried.
2) Dampen a clean white cloth and squeeze out excess water.
3) Place over the wax and apply warm iron over cloth. The steam melts the wax and it adheres to the cloth. Repeat until the steam pulls the wax completely off.

Grease

Vacuum, water, and ammonia:
1) Mix a solution that contains 50% water, 50% ammonia, and a few drops of liquid soap.
2) Spray on stain and let it sit no more than a few seconds. Use a wet-use vacuum and suck up the stain.
3) Repeat until stain is gone, and then vacuum wet area until it is dry.

Paint Thinner: Dip toothbrush or pour a small portion onto stain. Dab or scrub stain until it is gone.

Club Soda: Pour soda onto spot and dab with cloth. Repeat if needed until stain is gone.

Pine-Sol: Dip toothbrush in pine-sol and scrub.

Ink

Non-Aerosol Hair Spray: treat stained area with non-aerosol hairspray and blot with a clean white towel. Repeat as many times as necessary to remove ink.

Lipstick

Ivory Soap: Rub with warm, wet cloth onto stain. Work until stain is gone.

Coffee and Tea

Soda Water: pour onto stain and blot dry; repeat until stain is gone.

Red Wine

Soda Water: pour onto stain and blot dry; repeat until stain is gone.
Salt: Poor a lot of salt on area and let it soak up the stain. Vacuum shortly after.

Juice and Kool-Aid

Salt: sprinkle salt onto stain and it will dissolve the liquid. Vacuum right after and the stain should be gone.

Hydrogen peroxide, warm water, and cloth:
1) Mix hydrogen peroxide, small amount of dish detergent, and hydrogen peroxide.
2) Pour or spray solution onto stain and let sit. Blot until stain is removed.

Pet Stains

Rubbing alcohol: pour onto urine stain and let dry; this kills bacteria and odor.

Baking Soda: pour baking soda over stain and let sit. Vacuum after it has soaked stain up.

White Vinegar: sprinkle stain with white vinegar. Wait three minutes, sponge from the middle of the stain out, and blot with clean, dry cloth. Repeat until stain has been removed.

Mud

Shaving cream (foamy): Spray white, foamy cream onto the spot. Let it sit for three minutes, and then blot.
