For starters, engineered wood flooring tends to be stronger than regular solid hardwood flooring. It can also be installed over just about anything – concrete slab, existing wood floors, ceramic tile, etc. This certainly makes it attractive to someone looking to put in a wood floor with as little trouble as possible.

New advances have made it possible to put real wood as the top layer of each engineered plank. This makes engineered flooring almost indistinguishable from traditional solid wood flooring. This also means less wood is required for each plank. And even better, the finishes used by the factory are generally more durable than a finish you would apply yourself if you were installing solid plank flooring.

Since the finishes are applied at the factory, that means you can avoid all the mess, extra time and vapors associated with applying your own finish. You also don’t have to worry about sanding or taping plastic sheets up all over your house. With engineered wood flooring, you can walk on it as soon as it is installed. There is no waiting period, it’s instant gratification. And you don’t have to stain it!

The factory also puts multiple coats of finish on each wood plank which dries to a much harder protective layer than a finish you would apply yourself. This added protection means less maintenance for you over the years. It also means engineered floors are more scratch resistant than solid flooring. If you have kids or pets, engineered wood flooring is likely your best investment. It will save you time up front and over the life of the floor.

Engineered flooring offers strength, ease of use, and looks that rival solid wood flooring. In many cases the cost of engineered flooring is comparable to that of real plank wood. You can’t ask for anything better.

A Garage door opener is a piece of equipment used for opening and closing garage doors. Most models are remote controlled. Garage door openers are simple but extremely useful devices. So much so, that it’s hard to imagine living without them now.

The first garage door opener consisted of a radio transmitter, a receiver and an actuator to open or close the door. In this the receiver would detect a change in the amplitude and would open or close the door. However there was a security concern with these kinds of garage door openers. They could be opened by anybody with a transmitter. Also there were accidental openings of garage doors by neighbors trying to open their doors. The later door openers used a shared frequency to overcome the accidental opening by other users. Using dipswitches a total of 256 combinations were made to prevent interference from other garage door openers. However the security issue was still not overcome.

The present day garage door openers use rolling frequency or hopping code technology. In these the frequency of opening is look ahead type, that means every time the door is opened then the next time the door will be opened by another frequency.

The technology for garage door openers is fairly simple. Three kinds are used, chain drive, screw drive and belt drive. Chain drives are noisy as they use a metallic chain along with a metal trolley. However they are fairly cheap about $130 Screw drives consists of a threaded lead screw. They start at about $150 The newer models consist of plastic lined tracks to reduce the noise and increase the speed of opening. Belt drives are the costliest and the quietest. They begin at about $170

There is a misconception that the lifting is done by the door opener. However the actual lifting is done by the springs. When the door is closed the springs come into tension. When the door is being opened the spring does most of the lifting. There are two types linear expansion springs and torsional springs. Garage door openers are of two types, jackshaft type and trolley type. The jackshaft type occupies less space. The trolley type consists of trolley attached to the door and also to the motor. This occupies space in the ceiling but is more popular because it is safer. In jackshaft type, it is difficult to sense when someone is being crushed under the door. There are two types of motors available, AC and DC. AC is more common but DC has many advantages. It consumes less electricity, the speed is easily controlled and makes less noise.

There are some models which auto reverse incase of obstruction like a pet or a child. The remotes usually operate up to a distance of 150 feet. The remote can be used to switch on the light of the garage also. Most garage door openers come with a keypad, which can be installed outside the garage. This is used to open the garage, if the remote batteries are down or the user has forgotten the remote. Most garage door openers allow emergency release so that the door can be opened manually in case of power failures.

Buying A Wash Basin To Beautify Your Present Home

775

A wash basin is one of the most noteworthy components of a bathroom or even a kitchen. It is a utility component but the size, shape and colors also weigh in.

There are no classical sizes for a wash basin but one of the most commonly utilized sizes used around the world is 400 x 425mm. Many of the opulent wash basins can be rather more oversize than a natural sized basin. There are some fashion designer and glass wash basins that are commonly placed in en-suite bathrooms and also rather immense in size.

One of the current directions is a small wash hand basin that can be wall-hung and compared to a larger basin, it will need a support for supporting any extra weight. If your home has an en-suite, bathroom, and cloakroom then to keep the style same in all the places you can use the wall-hung wash basins, which are available in plenty of colors and style. There are different types of beautiful wall-hung wash basins available and you can check some of them online at the Fuzing megastore. One of the best wall-hung basins is the ones available in 400x250x155mm and made of vitreous China. These wall-hung wash basins are purchasable in different colors too like white, off white, blue, green, yellow etc.

When connecting wall-hung basins you need to assure that they have been well attached to their brackets because excessive mass can lead to cracks forming in the basins. If you have a small cloakroom then you can use the small wall-hung basins, which can be attached using some special brackets. If you are trying to fit some of the larger wall hung basins then you can rest them on a specially made semi-pedestal that will be able to hold your wash basin up and even cover up the waste pipe. Another important thing that you need to ensure when fitting wall-hung basins is that the wall on which you are going to mount the basin should be strong enough to take the load.

Wash basin Material

One of the important aspects of wash basins that you need to look at while buying one is the material it is made of. The most durable is ceramic but the most stylish is glass. Glass wash basin has become quite a popular design statement off late and is being used by more and more people. A glass wash basin has the ability to attract attention and can enhance the décor of an otherwise average bathroom. Today the market is replete with cutting edge glass wash basins. Some of the glass wash basins are available in transparent colors, some are simply transparent and some have irresistible and beautiful floral or other designs.

Some of the different dimensions available for a glass wash basin include:
* T19m/m x DIA 425 x H150
* T12m/m x DIA 425 x H150
* T12m/m x DIA 415 x H110
* T12m/m x L, W440 x H130
* T12m/m x L, W425 x H140
* T12m/m x DIA 475 x H8
* T12m/m x DIA 425 x H130
* T12m/m x W368 x L538 x H133
* T12m/m x L, W387 x H115 and more

Depending on the type of design the glass wash basin has, you can either mount it on the wall or have a pedestal unit with a small cupboard box and mirror, which can be used as a vanity kit or for keeping essential toiletries. Most of the glass wash basins have been designed in such a way that they have to be used with specific basin trap and waste and basin tap mixers.

Another type of wash basin, which is showing increasing popularity, is the above-the-counter wash basins that are available in glass, ceramic, as well as stainless steel. As compared to glass and stainless steel, it is easier to maintain ceramic.

Choosing A Wash Basin

There are certain basic things that you need to remember while shopping for a bathroom wash basin like:
* When selecting a wash basin ensure that the tap fittings have not been made. This is normally done because there are particular types of mixers that can be used only in specific wash basins.

* If you are looking to buy a pair of concealed mixers combined with a wall-hung water closet, then it is important to look at the structural stability of the walls before you proceed with mounting the wash basins. One alternative is that you can build a false wall.

* When you have selected a wash basin there is a probability that the basin has a small crack underneath, which might not catch the eye. Hence you should always check the entire basin and if required fill it with water to find out if it is of good quality or not.

If you’ve been sleeping on the same ratty sheets for years, it may be time to trade them in for crisp, new sheets. While many people are hesitant to buy new sheets because of the cost of a good sheet set, they really aren’t that expensive when you realize that you will be using them 365 times each year. Besides, clean, comfortable sheets don’t just look great; they actually can help you sleep better.

When you are choosing a set of sheets for your bed, the first thing you should do is take a look at your mattress. If you have a standard mattress, you won’t have any problem finding sheets that fit. However, if you have an extra long twin mattress or a very thick full, queen, or king size mattress (such as a pillow top), you will need to look for sheets made to fit these mattress types.

The next thing you should consider is what type of material you like to sleep on. Standard cotton, flannel, jersey, satin, and silk sheets are all readily available.

About Standard Cotton Sheets:
1. Standard cotton sheets are cool in the summer. They breathe well, which is especially important on hot nights, since this prevents you from feeling sticky and sweaty.
2. Cotton can be quite soft. Look for sheets with a high thread count. A thread count of 180 or 200 means the sheets will feel rough, while 400 count sheets feel as smooth as a baby’s skin.
3. If the sheets are pure cotton, they may shrink after several washings.

About Flannel Sheets:
1. Flannel sheets are great for winter use. You don’t have to spend an hour warming up your bed before you feel snuggly and warm.
2. Flannel sheets are rarely a good choice for warm climates. They do hold heat.
3. Flannel can pill up with extended use, so be prepared to replace your cozy sheets every few years.

About Jersey Sheets:
1. If you enjoy the comfort of a t-shirt, you will love these sheets. They are very comfortable to sleep on.
2. Jersey sheets are lightweight and may not last as long as some other sheet types.

About Satin Sheets:
1. Satin sheets are a favorite for people who want a bit of romance, but that silky smooth finish is a bit slippery. You may need to frequently tuck your top sheet back in.
2. Satin doesn’t breathe well and can be quite uncomfortable to sleep in during the warmer months.

About Silk Sheets:
1. Silk is just as romantic as satin. These sheets can also be a bit slippery.
2. Silk is a natural material and breathes well. Silk sheets are comfortable to sleep on year round.
3. Silk is fragile and needs special care to keep it from shattering.

Once you decide on the material you prefer, you are ready to shop for a sheet set. Don’t be afraid to experiment with color and pattern. After all, no one has to know that you have sheets with a wild design underneath that sophisticated navy blue bedspread.

I think decorative and faux painting techniques look great, are fun to do, and add a personal statement to a room. I’ve been adding my personal look to the walls in my homes ever since my husband and I purchased our first “fixer-upper.”

When I first starting using faux and decorative painting techniques on the walls in our home it was a financially motivated action. We didn’t have a lot of extra money. I couldn’t afford new furniture or flooring for a room but I could afford to buy some paint. But just painting the walls a solid color seemed boring to me so I started exploring faux and decorative painting. It didn’t take me long to get hooked. Why do I like faux and decorative painting on walls so much?

1) It’s an inexpensive way to change the look of an entire room. Paint is the most economical way to change the look of a room.

2) A painting technique on the walls minimizes and hides cosmetic flaws such as surface cracks and less than perfect patching jobs.

3) It’s easy to change when you’re sick of it. Repainting a room that has paint on the walls is a whole lot easier and much less time consuming than stripping wallpaper off walls and preparing those walls for paint.

4) It adds your own personal look and style to a space. Color and texture are fun and interesting. An entire home painted the same off-white color is dull and boring to me. A faux painting technique can evoke any mood you want in a room whether it’s a Tuscan look, retro 70’s look, a country look, something elegant, a cheery bright look for a child’s room, or any other look you want.

5) The choices of techniques and paints are nearly endless. Some of the more popular technique choices include: sponging, ragging, dragging, color washing, stenciling, crackling (pavingmasonrydecorativepaintingzone.paving/faux/cracklingfauxpainting), marbling, gilding, wood-graining, spattering, feather-dusting, and stippling. You could also use one of the specialty paint products on the market today such as Venetian plaster to create the look you want or buy a faux painting kit such as a Woolie painting kit to help make your project as fun and easy as possible.

While I highly recommend faux or decorative painting, there are a few things I’ve learned since I’ve started faux painting that I’d like to share with you. Some of these items are things to “not do” that I’ve learned the hard way. Others are tips and suggestions that were helpful to me.

1) Go to your local paint store or decorative painting store and look at the samples they have. For example, Home Depot has lots of different booklets and paint chips with faux paint finishes on them for you to look at and even take home to look at in your lighting. That pretty metallic finish on a paint chip in the store make look garish when you get it home and look at it in your home’s natural lighting.

2) Consider taking a class before doing your first project. Some paint stores and home improvement stores, such as Home Depot, offer free faux painting clinics and workshops. You can also find some very good faux painting classes for a reasonable fee by looking in your local paper or doing an Internet search.

3) Practice your technique on a piece of scrap wallboard before doing it on your wall. This is especially important if you are blending colors. A few years ago my son wanted his bedroom painted. He wanted me to use a Woolie (a great faux painting tool available at most paint supply stores) to blend together a burgundy and a caramel color. Each color looked great by itself, but when they got blended together too much a dark fuchsia color emerged. And anything resembling pink was not something my son wanted on his wall!

Because I had been faux painting for years I didn’t listen to my own advice about trying the technique on a piece of scrap board first nor did I buy sample sizes of paint to try out. I bought gallons because I wanted to save time. Luckily the store agreed to exchange the paint for me free of charge but we did have to paint over a wall and wait for it to dry before starting over with new colors.

4) Remember that the texture of your walls will dictate, to some extent, what faux painting techniques you can and cannot use. If your walls are smooth you can do just about any technique you want. But textured walls are very common, especially in newer homes. You may see striped walls in a brochure or on a sample wall and decide that’s what you want to do in your home; but if your walls are textured it’s going to be nearly impossible to achieve straight lines for your stripes. Keep in mind that faux finishes on paint chips from a store are done on a smooth surface. They will look a little different (but may still look very nice) if you do that same technique with the same colors on a textured wall.

5) If you’re going to do a faux technique in an entire room don’t start on the wall that people will first look at when they walk into the room. That means don’t start on the wall directly across from the doorway. Unless you’re a professional, it takes a little while for you to get your technique perfected in a room. Put that less than perfect start in the least noticeable part of the room.

6) If you get tired while painting and need a break, don’t stop in the middle of a wall. Stop at a corner. If you stop in the middle of the wall and don’t come back to work on the project again until after the paint is dry, you’re going to have a noticeable line on the wall. It won’t be pretty.

7) Think twice about mixing your own color with paint you have at home unless you are absolutely positive you’re going to have enough paint to do the entire job. If you mix your own color and run out of paint before you finish it will be time-consuming and challenging to match that color. You might be able to match it because many paint stores have specialty machines that can match a paint chip you take in, but if you’ve mixed together two different sheens of paint (for example let’s say you mixed a flat paint and a satin paint together) you’re going to have a hard time reproducing that same sheen. In some cases it may not be noticeable; but in other cases it will.

If you’re a beginner, start with an easy paint technique. Sponging is very easy and looks great. Another favorite of mine is the Woolie I mentioned earlier. There are a couple of different types. I like the Woolie roller best. It’s really easy to use and the results are fantastic. It comes with a short video. Watch it before you start painting. If you’re not going to watch the video before you buy your paint, there’s one important thing to remember. Buy paint colors that are at least two places away from each other on a paint strip. For example, if you pick out a paint strip with 5 yellows on it, don’t buy two colors that are right next to each other because they will be so close in color that you won’t see much variation when you put those colors on the wall and start to blend them.

Ordering Parts For Your Plumbing Through The Mail

The Internet has given rise to so many new and, frankly, odd things that there seems to be no end to it. One of the hugely popular areas that have arisen is the area of home improvements. You can see practically anything online, shop for the best price and have it delivered to your door. This, of course, fits in with the American motto of give me convenience or give me death! If nothing else, you avoid the mobs at the local hardware store each weekend.

There are a vast number of sites offering mail order plumbing products. Products range from complete pieces for renovations, such as entire plumbing systems for bathrooms, kitchens and so on to more isolated components. The sites allow you to see a completed project [so you can groan later when yours doesn’t look like it] and often provide detailed instructions on installation. Of course, the downside is there isn’t anyone to actually talk to when your project starts to look like abstract art.

You can also order individual plumbing parts off of sites. If you do this, be careful! Matching parts you need to those on a site can be a bit sketchy. First of all, there is no guarantee the site used the correct photograph for the part. What you see may not be what you get. Second, you need to know exactly what you need including sizing and accessories. Third, you have to wait for the parts to appear. You can find tremendous pricing for non-emergency projects, but major leaks usually need immediate attention.

There are two primary reasons to shop online for your plumbing needs. First, you can click around to find the best price. Second, you can always find what you want, even if you have to hunt through a few sites. This can be particularly advantageous if you have a unique situation which none of the local stores have parts for. There is always some online store specializing in the esoteric.

If you are looking for good prices, planning ahead and know exactly what you want, give online plumbing sites a try.

A swamp evaporative cooler can give you the best of cooling technologies without the disadvantages of air conditioning. Unlike air conditioners, swamp evaporative coolers require very little energy in order to work well, as long as the appropriate environmental conditions are met. Speaking of the environment, evaporative coolers are pollutant free because they work using nature’s own cooling mechanism.

The term swamp evaporative cooler is a bit misleading because an evaporative cooler actually has nothing to do with a swamp and in fact, wouldn’t work in swamp-like conditions. An evaporative cooler works the same way that cooling happens in nature, and the same way that our bodies cool themselves; by evaporation. If you’ve ever lived in a coastal climate or near a large body of water, you’re already familiar with evaporative cooling. You’ll have noticed that breezes coming off of the water are cooler than those coming from an inland direction. The reason for this is simple.

Nature always moves towards a state of equilibrium. So when a cooler area and a warmer area come into contact, the two temperatures will move towards each other and try to equal out. As warm, dry air passes over a body of water, it evaporates some of the water and is cooled by it. This same idea is reproduced in a swamp evaporative cooler. Hot, dry air from outside is pulled into the cooler by a fan. That air is pulled through a series of damp pads, where it absorbs water that has the effect of reducing the air’s temperature. As an added benefit, the pads also filter or clean the air as it passes through. Then the cooler, cleaner air is blown through into the room or office that you are cooling. In fact, the cooler keeps the air circulating in a room, meaning that you feel even cooler due to the slight breeze that the swamp evaporative cooler creates.

So in order for a swamp evaporative cooler to work efficiently, it needs to be used in a hot, dry climate. If your climate is more humid, an evaporative cooler is probably not the best choice for you. But where these coolers do work well, they work very well. They also save users money and energy. Some users have even had evaporative coolers converted so that they will work on solar power. Energy savings can be so significant that energy companies in states like California will offer rebates to clients who choose to install a whole-house swamp evaporative cooler.
