When we left off last week, we had removed the old wood sash windows and prepared the opening for the vinyl replacement windows. Now it’s time to install your new windows. You should have someone there to help you when doing the installation. First, Remove all shipping materials from the window. Now, if you are installing several different sizes, make sure you are putting the correct window in the correct opening. You need to put the window into the opening to make sure it’s going to fit, then remove it and run a bead of caulk on the face of the outside blind stop where the window will rest. You don’t want to caulk, only to discover the windows are too big. It’s worth the extra few minutes to make sure it’s going to fit. Lift the window and set the bottom in first. Then raise the top until it rests against the outside blind stops. Sometimes, when raising the top into position, the window frame will hit the top of the wood frame. You need to tap down on the top of the vinyl frame while keeping pressure towards the outside.

Once you determine that it’s going to fit, remove the new window and set it aside. Run a bead of caulk on the face of the outside blind stops. White latex painters caulk works fine. Raise the window into position again. Now have your helper hold the window in position while you raise and lower the sashes, making certain that the window is square in the opening. Remember how you ordered the windows 3/16″- 1/4″ shorter than the tightest measurement? This is where you use this space to adjust the frame to be the most plumb and level. Get a box of popsicle sticks and wood coffee stirrers at the grocery store. The coffee stirrers are about 1/16″ thick, and the popsicle sticks are approximately twice as thick. You want to put the shims in the four corners. Then caulk the gap on both sides and along the top before installing the inside stops. I don’t recommend putting any screws in the sides, but you can put one screw in the top center and one in the bottom center. You really dont have to use any screws in this kind of installation, since the shims will eliminate any side play, and the caulk on the blind stops will hold the frame in place as well. Remember, we still need to re-install the inside stops.

Before installing the inside stops, remove all the old nails and replace them with new nails. A 1″- 1 1/4″ finish nail is fine. Before installing the inside stops, scrape all old caulk off the stops. Then, while your helper holds the window in place, nail your stops back on. If the window has 4 stops, install the shortest ones first. That way you can bend the longer stops into place between the two short ones. Use a nail punch to sink the head past the surface of the stop. If you have several windows to do, i suggest doing the first window to this point before going to the next. How frustrating would it be to have a helper removing the old sashes, only to discover that the windows aren’t going to fit!? If the first one goes in fine, then you can send your helper ahead of you to start removing old sashes. The best way to avoid the nightmare of having a bunch of new windows that won’t fit is to make sure you measure CORRECTLY. Remember, tight minus 1/4″ on the width and height should be fine.

Finish the inside by caulking the area of the inside stop where it meets the casing, and the point where the stop meets the new frame. Fill the nail holes in the inside stops with caulk to hide the nail heads. Now it’s time to finish the outside. A quality replacement window will either have a sloped frame to match the slope sill, or it will come with an insert that fits under the new frame to fill the gap created by the sloping wood sill. If you buy a lower grade window that doesn’t come with anything to fill the gap underneath, you can buy some wood trim to fill the space, or you can get a flat vinyl trim that attaches to the face of the bottom of the new frame. The flat trim is available on my website under the “shop” tab. Once you cover the bottom gap, it’s time to caulk where the outside blind stops meet the vinyl frame, and where the bottom gap filler meets the wood sill.

That’s it! You’re done! You can buy accessories to cover your old wood sills with a vinyl wrap extrusion. That can also be found on the website under the “purchase trim” tab. Next week we are going to start on replacing old aluminum windows.

In our past articles I talked about all the steps required to properly replace your old wood sash windows with energy efficient vinyl windows. I told you how to measure for the new windows. Then we discussed the removal of the wood sashes and parting bead. Finally, I told you how to install, seal, and trim the vinyl replacement windows. But, what if those old windows in your home are made of aluminum instead of wood? Is the process the same? No, it’s not the same at all. So, the next few articles are going to explain the differences between replacing wood windows versus aluminum windows.

When discussing the proper frame style for replacing the wood sash windows, I explained the difference between new construction frames versus replacement frames. When replacing aluminum windows, there is another option we have to consider regarding frame style. It’s called a “retrofit” frame. Let’s go over each frame type. First, we have the new construction frame with the nailing fin. If you choose to go this route, you have to remove the exterior around each window opening, pull out the nails holding the aluminum window to the studs, nail in the new vinyl window, apply flashing, caulk, and re-install the exterior around each window.(I get tired just talking about it!)In addition to being a whole lot of labor, you can run into major problems trying to install the exterior product around each window opening. If your home has stucco, you have to try and match the rest of the stucco. It can be done, but not by you. Even most professional stucco guys can’t get a perfect match. What if you have wood siding? Well, you can cut away 2″ of the siding around each window to get to the nail fin, then you can apply 1 X 2 or 1 X 3 trim around each window. Certainly not as much work as the stucco home, but probably more work than the average homeowner cares to tackle. What if each window is surrounded by brick? Let’s not even go there! You would have to remove the bricks, then re-install them all when finished.

Trust me, you don’t want to replace your old aluminum windows with new construction vinyl windows. You want to use either the replacement frame like the one used to replace the wood sash windows, or something called a retrofit frame , that is popular in the west where stucco is a common exterior. Since the procedure for measuring is the same regardless of the frame style chosen, this article will discuss the proper measuring procedure, and future articles will explain the difference in the installation process for replacement versus retrofit.

If you look at the portion of the aluminum frame that goes around the window opening into your surrounding walls, you will see three separate “legs” that form two pockets. The outside leg and the center leg form the first pocket. Your screen and stationary panel will be in this pocket. The center leg and inside leg form the second pocket, and your sliding panel is in that pocket. Find the “leg” that is the widest on all four sides. When measuring the width, run your tape measure from the widest leg on the left to the widest leg on the right. This should be the narrowest measurement. Then, subtract 3/8″ from that measurement. This is the width of the replacement window. Measure the height the same way. When measuring the height, measure as close to the center of the window as possible. This is especially important on windows wider than six feet, because the top wood header has a tendency to sag over time, making the center of the opening the narrowest. You don’t need to deduct 3/8″ from the height like you did on the width. 1/4″ is fine. These are the dimensions you use when ordering your vinyl window. If you have any picture windows(windows without a vent panel), there will only be two legs and one pocket. You still measure the same way.

Next week I will discuss whether your home is a candidate for retrofit frames or replacement frames..

Glass partitions? If you consider this to be something featureless and office-like, you still know very little about ability of glass to create warmth and comfort! Today you will hardly be surprised by the panoramic glazing – the megalopolis residents are accustomed that the apartment can have one or even few fully transparent external walls. Architects successfully use glass in the interior of municipal housing and achieve shocking results.

Glass partitions are often used: in shopping and office centers, fitness clubs, private interior. And no wonder! In fact, glass is ideally suitable for partitioning of apartments.

You divide apartment space according to your desire. As a result, you obtain a functional and comfortable area
Strictly speaking, glass blocks are actively used as the fully-featured construction material for a long time. Modern glass blocks did not loose their excellent technical properties (durability, fire and moisture resistance, unique heat and sound insulation), but also became beautiful. And today only few interior designers do not include at least few glass “bricks”. Transparent walls are appropriate both to housing with large area and to a small apartment. Nowadays glass blocks are used for decoration of ceilings, floors and stairs (sometimes even stages), for enclosure of winter gardens, for construction of columns, partitions. If to glaze, for example, part of narrow corridor, it becomes lighter and looks not as a long dark room, but as part of the system of connected vessels. The same effect can be achieved by building the transparent partition between the tiny anteroom and sole dwelling room: if necessary, apartments can be visually insulated by Roman shades or screen. Unlike ordinary glass, glass blocks are less transparent and a little distort the image, making it less evident and mysteriously diffusing it. Therefore, even if you do not decorate the wall from transparent bricks at all, you do not feel yourself as in an aquarium.

Modern glass blocks can be mat, coloured and grooved. Nowadays designer salons also offer glass bricks, on the surface of which the picture from the smallest coloured glass bubbles is formed. Such glass blocks can be elements for whole pictures with landscapes, abstract pictures, images of animals or birds and even portraits. A particular type of glass blocks is blocks that imitate the structure of the natural stone (for example, marble, malachite, granite, agate), linen or jean fabric, mica, sun glints on water. The recent novelty of the market is glass blocks from the “baked” coloured glass. In fact, every block is a multicoloured stained glass, which changes depending on the time of day and illumination. Though the process of manufacturing of such glass blocks is very complicated and costly.

It is possible to build single-colour and mosaic walls from coloured glass blocks. Meanwhile producers offer “bricks” of various tinctures – from pale-beige and greenish to brightly-orange, cornflower blue, navy blue and violet. Clearly, such bright tones practically fully hide everything that takes place on the other side of the glass wall, however, at the same time such partitions admit natural light and in darkness look like the magic lantern due to illumination.

On statistican, on the Internet daily appears about 60 000 new sites. Only imagine this enormous sum – sixty thousand! Each of these sites has a certain design – unique, stolen or composed the strangers, simply taken of the template… And behind each of sites there is at least one person.

Unconditionally, when business reaches such scales, to a course there is everything to win attention of the user, to involve it in itself.

One of the most obvious ways to make it – bright, bright and unique design. Today web design is engaged almost everyone the second. But really unique and remembered design are capable to create completely not many.

Webdesign, as well as any other design, demands talent from the person who is engaged in it – artistry and ability to create is banal interesting images then to express them on the screen monitor screen is given not to everyone.

However, webdesign is only one side of a medal. Except a picture which sees the visitor of any site, there is also a certain underside – system of administration which is necessary for selecting to the site creator before starting with it operation.

One of the most perspective CMS is TYPO3 – free of charge extended control system of a site which allows to work at once as with “person” of a site, visible for visitors, and with its “underside”.

The system typo3 works in two modes – frontend (the interface for visitors) and backend (the interface for managers). Besides two specified modes, is available also function of frontend-editing which allows editors to amend directly at review of the interface for visitors.

With system application typo3 site web-design is extremely convenient. In typo3 the site looks like a tree of pages, on each of which contents units take places. For typo3 exist not only ready templates, but also templates which can be created in language typoscript, used for mapping and site change.

Here are some useful tips to know before wallpapering a room

Wallpaper varies greatly in its material content, which helps determine how a paper looks and how it handles.

Wallpaper varies greatly in its material content, which helps determine how a paper looks and how it handles. Vinyl wallpaper are popular because they are durable, fairly easy to install, and easy to maintain. There are fabric-backed vinyl, paper-backed vinyl, and ones designed to look like a three dimensional surface, such as plaster, granite, or grass cloth, which are suitable for walls that aren’t perfectly smooth.

Fabric wallpaper is usually made of cotton, linen, or other natural plant fibers, such as grass-cloth, hemp, or burlap. Most textiles fray easily and are not washable. Solid paper wall coverings include hand-screened papers, foils, flocked papers with textured patterns, and murals. Both textile and paper wallpapers should be installed by professionals. Thinking beyond wallpaper covering, the possibility of stone, ceramic tile, wood, and metal is different materials that can cover walls too.

To determine how much wallpaper to buy, measure the height and width of each wall using a steel tape measure. Round up to the nearest foot. Multiply the height and width of each wall, and then add the figures together to get the rough square footage. How a room is used will help you determine what wall coverings are most suitable. Get a sample or one rolls and looks at it in the room with your other furnishings and samples to compare there different pattern and texture.

When it comes to wall-coverings choices, you may want to think outside the box, as they say, and consider new materials as well as traditional materials used in new and different ways. Think about new places to use them, such as decorative tile in the dining room or wood in the bathroom. You might choose an elegant linen or flocked paper for the living room. Either kind of paper texture will add richness to a room.

Choosing the Right Down Comforter Set For Your Home

Choosing the right comforter set can mean the difference in a comfortable sleep or a dissapointing and expensive purchse. Read this article to educate yourself on the benefits of down bedding.

Down is defined as fine, soft, fluffy feathers forming the first plumage of a young bird and underlying the contour feathers in certain adult birds. The shape of a down unit or ‘cluster’ gives it loft and traps the air to keep you warm. Down can be one dimensional; flat with quills, two dimensional, or rounded, three dimensional or representing the shape of a dandelion seed pod.

Down comes in two types, Duck and Goose. As far as the warmth factor go duck and goose are equal. The difference lies in the fact that duck down clusters take up a smaller area. In order to make a full comforter, manufacturers compensate by offering higher fill ounces for duck down.

Down is actually measured in the U.S. using a method known as “fill power”. Basically this translates into the amount of fluff the down has. The higher the fill power number the better the quality of the down fill. A fill power of 600 is considered good quality, 700-800 is considered excellent quality and anything over 800 is considered superb quality.

The weight of the down blanket also makes a big difference in the warmth. When you are looking for a down comforter it is important that you know what you want in the weight and fill power. A heavy comforter will provide a lot of warmth, maybe too much if you live in a warm climate or are used to sleeping with lighter sheets. Some prefer to sleep with fewer blankets, even on a cold night so a lighter weight would be better in that case. If you prefer to bundle up and soak in the warmth, a high fill power and heavy weight would be the best choice for you. You may also want to consider purchasing a lighter weight for the summer and a heavier blanket set for the winter months.

There are also regular goose or duck feathers used in bedding. These are often used in feather top mattresses and as filling for down pillows or comforters. The ratio of feathers to down will create a difference in quality and price, the more down, generally the higher the quality and price of the material.

When it comes to quality bedding nothing beats the inviting warmth and softness of down comforter sets. Down clusters trap more air for its weight than any synthetic fiber. This is why a light and fluffy down comforter will keep you warmer than a blanket of the same weight filled with synthetic fibers. Ounce for ounce down provides three times the warmth than that of synthetic fibers. The millions of interlocking filaments that a down comforter has trap in the warm air and keeps out the cold. Synthetic fibers tend to clump creating cold spots. Down evenly distributes itself to cover the entire blanket.

The design of the comforter also plays a role in the final quality of the set. Thread count and the correct stitching can make a big difference in the way that a comforter performs. You want to look for a down comforter that has a quilted stitch pattern with a baffle wall to keep the feathers in their own compartments to further ensure even distribution.

Illusion of texture.
After setting the illumination and selecting optimum colours for the bathroom, we will pass on to finishing materials.

The basic rules of designers are as follows:

1. Any line in the interior divides the area in two halves.

2. Large elements in the small room visually diminish it.

3. Horizontal lines increase the premise width, but diminish its height. Vertical lines have the opposite effect.

Now we will be more specific.

Up to now, the most popular finishing material for the bathroom is tiles. They are beautiful, comfortable and practical. But tiles have one peculiarity – the joints between separate tiles. According to the paving technology, it is impossible to do without them. In such cases the colour of the grout for these joints is to be maximally close to the basic colour of the tile. It allows to avoid a great number of horizontal and vertical lines.

The second rule is relevant not only to furniture and sanitary equipment, but also to the size of tiles, paved on the floor and walls. For little premises it is better to use the mosaic or tiles of the smallest possible size.

The third rule is the universal rule of stylists and designers. It is the same for clothes and design of the room. If you want to make the room wider – use horizontal stripes, if you want to make it higher – use vertical stripes. But do not forget rule number one.

Through the Looking Glass.
A mirror is an indispensable thing in a bathroom. In fact, it occupies almost no space, but extends the walls. It is the optimal decision for increasing the area of small rooms. So it not only widens the room, but also reflects the light.

Designers use a fascinating method for further optical increase in the area. They hang mirrors opposite each other. And if the mirror wall increases room only by two times, two mirrors extend the bathroom infinitely.

Furniture and sanitary equipment.
The more the number and size of the furniture, the smaller the premise. This principle is very plain and easy to understand. But if we can’t do without furniture, perhaps, it is possible to solve the problem. Try to use furniture from glass.

Do you want to have the chair in the bathroom? No problem, just choose the chair with thin legs and a transparent back. But it will be better to replace the chair by a light stool or ottoman. There are models that are screwed to the wall and occupy even less space.

You want to place household chemical goods somewhere, but the closet occupies a lot of place. Hang up open shelves on walls. The vertical shelf will raise the ceiling, the horizontal one will extend walls. Do not make wide shelves, the depth 15-20 cm will be quite enough for you.

Think, maybe you will remove the stand from under the sink and replace it by something less bulky. Now a great number of variants are available. For example, a small bathroom sink occupy the minimum space. Such a sink has the same advantage and disadvantage – its size. And when the water is flowing from the tap at high pressure, your floor can be wet as if in the swimming pool. The next optimum variant with regard to size is the hanged sinks. Its pipes can be built into the wall and do not occupy space. The next variants are sinks on a pedestal and semi-pedestals.

What occupies the greatest amount of space in our bathroom? Certainly, it is the bath. So we have one more standard method of increasing the bathroom – to replace the bath with a shower cabin. For greater visual increase of the room, try to select a cabin with maximally transparent walls or keep cabin doors open.

What shall we do with the lavatory pan? We know well the standard models of w.c. pans, as well as the amount of space they occupy. But there are more compact models. These are lavatory pans with a hidden side, i.e. floor or suspended pans. A new model is corner lavatory pan, someone may find it optimal.

Little cunnings for extension the area.
Specialists say that a bathroom is the room, where one can stay on their own. Since his attention is not occupied by anything else, he starts scrutinising the interior. Nothing can irritate the individual more and even more diminish the area as disorder in this interior. It makes the little premise smaller.

The followings small pieces of advice will help to extend the area:

1. Build in all pipes into walls yet on the stage of repair in the bathroom.

2. Try not to hang towels all over the bathroom as sails, after drying it will be better to roll them and store somewhere on the shelf.

3. If you like to decorate your bathroom, instead a multitude of small things use one, but of larger size.

4. Keep balance, do not encumber shelves by cosmetics (it is recommended not to keep it in the bathroom) and other nice trifles.

5. Remove everything what is possible to remove from the field of vision. Take some time for bringing the linen closet in order. Remove things, which you no longer need, from the shelves. Vacate the space for things that are permanently needed and used.

6. If you have a bath and use curtain for douche, use the curtain of the light colour, maximally light and transparent. After taking the douche, do not close the bath by the curtain, but move it to the wall.

7. If you have a window in the bathroom, try to extend it, beautify it by the light tulle and let the sunlight into the premise. This improvement will allow you to place the flower in the bathroom, but it must be moisture-resistant.

8. If your bathroom has no window, hang the picture on the wall with the view on mountains, the sea or the garden. This enables to extend your bathroom visually.

TR PVC Cladding is a Very Attractive Option

PVC cladding can offer benefits that are not available from other cladding materials. Aluminum, fiber cement, stucco, stone and timber are the other materials used for wall claddings.

PVC is a plastic and like all plastics, it is mostly not recyclable. New PVC scrap and cuttings can be recycled, while used material might be used as core (with a coating of new plastic) in panels.

On the other hand, it does not cause air pollution like painting and does not use as much energy as aluminum.

PVC is Hygienic, Versatile and Workable

PVC cladding does not accumulate difficult-to-remove dirt. Any superficial dust can be washed off. It does not result in significant condensation and does not shed particles to any significant degree. Any surface water can be easily wiped off or dried out.

PVC is a preferred material for cladding walls in hotels, restaurants, hospitals, diaries and such establishments where hygiene is important. PVC cladding makers typically take care to conform to the hygiene standards prescribed in relevant regulations.

PVC is versatile and can be produced to incorporate different properties needed for different requirements. Colors, heat resistance, resistance to chemicals, fire resistance, insulation properties etc can be controlled while making PVC sheets. This makes it possible to select the right kind of sheets for different environments.

PVC is a workable material that can be bent and cut to meet needs during installation. The sheets are often designed to enhance such workability. This feature makes it easier to cover walls completely and neatly using PVC cladding.

PVC Cladding is Great Looking and Easy to Install

With a range of colors, patterns and smooth or matte surfaces, PVC cladding can provide the kind of look you prefer. They can be selected to suit special themes and produce different kinds of decorative effects.

PVC cladding systems typically come with profiles and trims that make them easy to install. Panels might be designed for flush interlocking, and to hide fasteners such as nails used to fix them to walls.

PVC cladding is great on many counts. They are hygienic and can create pleasing interiors. Their properties can be tailored to meet special needs like resistance to heat, chemicals, fire and UV light. PVC is a workable material that can be bent or cut to suit local needs.

It is easy to install PVC cladding systems. They are typically designed to fit flush, with interlocking panels and other devices, and come with finishing accessories like profiles and trims. They can even be designed to keep all fasteners invisible and behind the scenes.

There’s light at the end of the utility bill tunnel, thanks to an easy-to-install skylight that not only brings light to dark spaces, but also helps cut energy costs. That savings is not insignificant, as Americans spend 20 percent of their electricity bills on lighting their home.

Called tubular skylights, they are ideal for situations where there just is not enough light and the homeowner doesn’t want to install a more traditional lighting system, explains a spokesman for ODL, the Michigan company that makes the skylights. They’re perfect for bathrooms, hallways, closets, laundry rooms and just about any room in the house.

Easy To Install

In addition to being Energy-Star qualified, the skylight is also easy for homeowners and contractors to install. A new two-piece installation kit makes installing the skylight simple because the bottom adjustable tube overlaps the top adjustable tube. Just cut a hole in the ceiling and a corresponding one on the roof. Slide in the dome flashing under the roof shingles and attach the reflective tubes. Cap them with the ceiling covering. You may download detailed instructions and watch video clips at paving.odl.paving/sky lights.

The skylight features a patented Solar Lens Dome, which increases light through the tube. During the full midday sun, a 10-inch tubular skylight lights up 150 square feet of space with a solar throughput equal to about three 100-watt bulbs. The 14-inch tubular skylight is designed to light up 300 square feet-an output equal to about five 100-watt bulbs.

ODL also offers a 10-inch and 14-inch Severe Weather Tubular Skylight, for areas where hail or hurricanes are common.

Basement Dehumidifier Basics

When constructed properly and with the appropriate air conditioning and ventilation, a basement should be dry.

When constructed properly and with the appropriate air conditioning and ventilation, a basement should be dry. But many basements are particularly prone to dampness because of their poor design and ventilation. Dampness like this is a perfect breeding ground for mold and mildew, especially in basements where old books, magazines, clothing and suitcases are stored.

When the humidity level goes over 50%, the water vapor in the air can cause furniture to warp, moisture to condense on walls and floors and promote growth of fungus. It will also accelerate wood rot. For those family members with allergies, a basement dehumidifier is crucial to lessen the health risks linked to toxic mold and fungus.

But before you go off to purchase a basement dehumidifier, consider taking some time to investigate the reason behind the high humidity, and then repairing the underlying problems. For example, your basement should ideally be the same temperature as the rest of your house, and not an isolated cool temperature zone. Try adding weather-stripping to any basement doors and windows. If the basement is uninsulated, you’ll have to weigh the costs of adding insulation against that of running a basement dehumidifier.

Buying a basement dehumidifier will require a little planning. Know the cubic footage of the basement space that it will be going into. Also you will need to decide on getting a permanently installed unit versus a portable dehumidifier. An other shopping point is to consider are the size of the unit- will it fit in the space you are planning for it? Also be aware that some models are noisier than others, so ask for a demonstration before you buy.

A dehumidifier works on the same principle that refrigerators and air conditioners do. They pass the humid air over a bank of cold coils and in the process extract a good portion of the moisture via condensation. This condensation drips off the coils into collection pockets inside the dehumidifier. Meanwhile the dry air flow, heated somewhat by the extraction of humidity, is directed out of the unit back into the room.

Since the dehumidifier is in the basement and out of the way, many people forget that it requires some maintenance. It is important to empty and clean the collection container inside the unit periodically, otherwise it will be prone to bacterial growth. Some companies manufacture basement dehumidifiers which have no inner collection container, but simply a hose that can be run to a floor drain, and these are a perfect solution to the problem.
